Rakiraki Holidays Fiji – Cheap Fiji Island Holidays

One of the best places to travel on the quiet island of Fiji is Rakiraki. It is a secluded island in the South Pacific about 1,100 miles north of New Zealand. It is only a 10 hour air flight from Los Angeles or four hour flight from Sydney.

The island of Fiji is of volcanic origin and is a very friendly island. The word Fiji means “hello” and the islanders will always welcome you. Rakiraki is a small village filled with coconut groves, bamboo, aromatic flowers, flying fox, parrots, and a giant honey eater called kikau. Rakiraki sits on the northernmost tip of Viti-Levu and is primarily an agricultural community with amenities.

On the Way to Rakiraki

The Kings Road: Along the northern coastal route of Vitu Levu is Kings road. An area that is seldom seen by travelers. Kings road is a remote site that will take you to breathtaking country. The road is poor but well worth the ride, especially with cheap Fiji car hire. A picturesque view of the Nakauvadra Mountain Range full of lush growth including sugar cane. Fijian natives legend says that these mountains are home of the snake god Degei, the creator of all the islands.

Vaileka

About 1.2 miles inland west of Rakiraki on Kings road is a town called Vaileka. This is a quaint town with a few necessities. The village has few cafes, a cake shop, a grocery, the Community Center, and two banks if you need to change your travelers checks; Colonial Bank and Westpac Bank.

Udreudre’s Tomb

Udreudre’s Tomb is less than a mile west of Rakiraki, the resting place of the notorious cannibal Ratu Udreudre. It is told by the Ratu son to reverend Richard Lyth back in 1849 that each stone represents one of the chief’s victims. Evidently Ratu Udreudre ate nothing but his war victims for there are 872 stones.

Naiserelagi Catholics Mission

About 15 miles southeast of Rakiraki is the Naiserelagi Catholics Mission. The church was built in 1917. In 1962, Jean Charlot painted a mural of a black Christ where Jesus is in three biblical scenes.

Navatu Rock

Navatu Rock is located 6 miles west of Rakiraki near Vitawa. On top of the rock was once a fortified village who believed that from here spirits would leave for the after life.

Ellington Wharf

Ellington Wharf is about 3 miles east of Rakiraki. Which you take a ferry to Nananu-i-Ra, one of the most popular places in the area. On the wharf is the Coconut Café, serving curries, fish, soups, and snacks.

Ellington Wharf Adventure Sports offers game and sport fishing trips, windsurfing with winds of 10 knots or more, kayaking, and sea kayaking safaris.

Nananu-I-ra

Nananu-i-ra is a paradise of white sandy beaches and evergreen trees. Most residents are English decent. It is famous for windsurfing and diving. There are no roads or villages. There is also kayaking and trekking.

Rakiraki Accommodation

You want to book accommodations in advance, especially if you want a cottage. Take cash and plenty of change, not to many places will take a credit card.

Wananavu Beach Resort

Very comfortable with balconies or self contained villas by the water. A view of the marina, tennis and volleyball courts, diving, and snorkeling. Has a restaurant/bar, the cost for a meal is $10-$35, good food.

McDonald’s Nananu Beach Cottages

Located right in front of the jetty. Blue and yellow cottages that are self contained, hammocks, and a restaurant meals costing $10 to $20, serves pasta, curries, chicken, and has lovo, a earth oven or cooking pit; food is wrapped in banana leaves stuffed with palusami, taro leaves, onions, coconut, and sometimes meat. McDonald’s Nananu Beach activities: off shore coral, thousands of fish, sea snakes.

Betham’s Beach Cottages

Has cabins fully furnished and a full kitchen, bathroom, and veranda. Private café, meals cost around $16-$20.

Charlie’s Place

Owned by Charlie and Marie. A very private place. They have two self-contained cottages on the hill with full kitchens and laundry. The biggest cabin has a view of the bays. There is also a cottage in the garden.
